The Highlands Resort is situated on approximately 3 acres, is an LGBTQ-friendly Russian River resort, features comfortable rooms & cabins and a clothing-optional pool, and is walking distance from the popular Russian River. The Highlands Resort has operated since the early 1920s when it was known as Highland Park Lodge. Like many of the resorts in the area, it began by offering platform tent camping and began adding cabins during the 1930s. In that era guests took the ferry from San Francisco to Sausalito where trains headed to the “Vacation Playland” villages of Guerneville, Rio Nido and Monte Rio. The current cabins date from the early 1940s. In the 1970s the resort changed ownership and the resort was turned into a gay resort. This was at the beginning of the area’s revival as a tourist destination, especially for LGBT guests, during the 1980s. Highlands Resort has always attracted a loyal following of guests looking for a quiet, relaxing place to stay that is friendly and fun. The current owners have continued to restore the cabins and have tried to capture a bit of the 1940s and 50s by using vintage furniture and finishes. The resort features 10 cabins which includes 15 guestrooms, and 10 campsites. According to the owners, the resort is allowed to operate with up to 18 campsites, but they have only operated 10 campsites historically. This unique opportunity has the potential to add guestrooms/ cabins, or add glamping units to the existing campsite. In 2004, Sonoma County approved an expansion of the resort which would allow for 23 units/cabins if the number of campsites is reduced to 8 (prospective buyers should verify with the county).
